CT Man Nabbed With Drugs, Guns Following Traffic Crash, State Police Say

A Connecticut man was allegedly found with drugs and two guns after fleeing the scene of a crash.

Aamir Burnett, age 33, of New Haven, was arrested around 10:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 9, after he attempted to flee the scene of a crash on I-95 n the area of I-95 and Interstate 91 split, said the Connecticut State Police.

At the time he was apprehended, police said Burnett was in possession of two handguns and a “large amount” of marijuana.

After the crash, a witness followed Burnett from the scene and told police he was in the area of Franklin and Chapel streets, in New Haven, where he tried to outrun the police, state police said. 

Following the arrest, investigators seized a box with two handguns. 13.7 ounces of marijuana and paraphernalia, on the ground of an elementary school, state police said. 

Burnett was charged with:

  • Evading responsibility
  • Following too closely
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia near a school, 
  • Possession near a school
  • Possession with intent to sell
  • Violation of pistol permit requirements
  • Carrying a pistol without a permit
  • Illegal possession of weapons in a motor vehicle
  • Illegal sale of an assault weapon
  • Illegal possession of a large magazine
  • Risk of injury to a child
  • Interfering with an officer/resisting
  • Two counts of criminal possession of a firearm
  • Two counts of possession of a weapon on school grounds
  • Violation of deadly weapons registration requirements

Following his arrest, police learned Burnett had an active warrant out of New York and he was also held on a fugitive from justice charge.

His bond was set at $250,000.
